Vendors and Sources
A (very) eclectic collection of clues
This page used to exist at http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/~dale/VendorsandSourcesDaleChayes.htm (and still (2008-07-17) still does for a while.... The last update for that page was January 2004
It's a pain but I am (slowly) "fixing" the sloppy html generated by whatever lame tool I originally created this content in..... there are also some broken links (actually surprisingly few considering that they are 4 years old. So in 'net years, that must be about 400 human years!
Design Software (for OS X):

Positioning systems hardware
It used to be more than just GPS in the bad old days. One of these years we will have a GPS failure and then there will be new incentives to have multiple sources (not just ~clones of GPS>
- POS/MV Applanix Position and Orientation system for Marine Vehicles. Applanix was bought by Trimble in 2003 but continues to operate independently. We have installed several, including on the Ewing, Thompson, Knorr and Healy.
- Trimble Ag132 differential GPS receiver. It was designed for agricultural applications but it works well for us too. A robust, well packaged differential GPS receiver. We have (at least) three at Lamont where they are used for precision navigation across a broad range of shipboard, estuary and land applications. We used one with Omnistar satellite differential corrections to support our DP drilling effort on the Knorr.
- Xemics GPS module for embedded systems
- Trimble Lassen SQ GPS module and Lassen SKII GPS circuit board
Positioning systems software
- The National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) 0183 interface specification order page. This is the "standard" that is approximated in lots of different ways by many GPS receivers.
- Internet DGPS corrections and resources.
- Oziexplorer (Windoze ) application for live, moving map GPS.
- An amazing collection of GPS info from Jack Yeazel, Joe Mehaffey, Dale DePriest
- Stan Huntting's sawatch (Windoze) application for monitoring the performance of a stationary GPS receiver
- VisualGPS GPS (free) (Windozes)
Hardware (interfaces, modules, development boards, interfaces):
- ZWorld Ethernet development module
- TI MSP430 TCP430 reference model implemented by Soft Baugh
- USB interfaces, acquisiton modules, etc at Saelig Inc.
- Ethernet to serial and synchro interfaces at BBG
Wireless Mesh Networking:
-
TinyOS: is " an open-source operating system designed for wireless embedded sensor networks."
- TinyOS under OSX (a blog entry with fairly clear instructions about how to get TinyOS working under OS X)
- Weirdly Serene Notion of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN blog) mostly by Dan Steingart.
- Wireless Sensor Networks at Crossbow Technology
Software:
Miscellaneous Stuff
- Life Link Shovel at REI but if you are really thinking about the avalanche business, consider supporting the Avalanche Center by purchasing through their store.
- Disk recovery shop Drive Savers (ask me and I'll whip out my soap box and foam at the mouth about backups)
