In considering the Clock of the Long Now Danny Hillis proposed some interesting design principles:

Another interesting view of design is provided by Peter Morville's User Experience Honeycomb approach. Erez Kikin-Gil developed an Excel-based tool called UX Radar" that implements the "honecomb" as a chart.
