I stumbled into an old write up http://riftlabs.com/2010/11/tools-for-the-lean-hardware-start-up from Rift Labs (used to be some other name) about tools (hardware and software) for hardware development on a thin budget. Many of their comments resonated with me, including the confusing terminology of Eagle and the notion that life is too short to fuss with parts from vendors who don't provide solid documentation, working examples, evaluation boards, etc. research lab)
